AmexGold vs Platinum

Updated April 2026

Amex Platinum Travel Credits 2026:
$800+ in Annual Value

The Platinum's travel credits are its strongest argument at $895/year. Here is the complete breakdown of every travel benefit, what it is actually worth, and the limitations you need to know.

Fine Hotels + Resorts

CLEAR Plus

Fine Hotels + Resorts Credit

$600/yr

The FHR credit is $300 per semi-annual period (January-June and July-December), applied when you book qualifying FHR properties through Amex Travel. This is one of the most valuable single credits on any premium card -- but it comes with significant constraints.

What you also get with FHR

  • + Complimentary breakfast for two
  • + $100 property credit
  • + Room upgrade when available
  • + Noon early check-in
  • + 4pm late checkout

Key limitations

  • - Must book through Amex Travel portal
  • - Only FHR-listed properties qualify (~1,000 hotels)
  • - $300 cap per half-year (not annually in one go)
  • - Not all luxury hotels are FHR properties
  • - Credit does not stack to $600 if unused in H1

Airline Incidental Fee Credit

$200/yr

Select one airline at the start of each year. The $200 credit covers incidental charges from that airline only -- not ticket purchases. This is one of the more restrictive credits on the Platinum.

Uber Cash

$200/yr

The Platinum provides $15/month in Uber Cash plus a $20 bonus in December, totaling $200/year. This is more valuable than the Gold's $10/month ($120/year). Works for Uber Eats and regular Uber rides. Must add your Platinum card to the Uber app and select it as your Uber Cash source. Like Gold, monthly credits do not roll over.

Travel Insurance (Both Cards)

Both Gold and Platinum include the same core travel insurance when you pay for your trip with the card:

Trip Delay Reimbursement

6+ hour delays: up to $500 per covered ticket for meals, hotel, transportation. Applies to round-trip tickets paid with your card.

Trip Cancellation Insurance

Up to $10,000 per trip for non-refundable expenses if you cancel due to covered reasons (illness, severe weather, natural disaster).

Baggage Insurance Plan

Gold: up to $500 for checked baggage. Platinum: up to $3,000. Both cover lost, stolen, or damaged baggage.

Car Rental Loss/Damage

Secondary coverage (after your primary auto insurance) for damage or theft when renting a car and declining the rental company CDW.

Amex Gold Travel Benefits

Gold is less travel-focused but not travel-free. It earns 3x on flights booked directly with airlines or through Amex Travel (vs Platinum's 5x). It also includes the Hotel Collection programme -- 2,900+ properties with a $100 hotel credit on stays of 2+ nights (no breakfast, no room upgrade guarantee).

For someone who takes 4-6 flights per year from airports without Centurion Lounges and stays at non-FHR hotels, the Gold's 3x on flights plus the Hotel Collection credit covers most of their travel value at $570 less per year.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the Amex Platinum $200 airline incidental credit work?

You must select one airline at the start of each calendar year through your Amex account. The $200 credit then applies to incidental fees charged by that airline: checked bag fees, seat upgrades, in-flight food and drink, lounge day passes, and similar incidentals. It does NOT apply to ticket purchases, award redemption fees, or mileage points purchases. You can change your selected airline once per year. Enrollment is required.

What is the Fine Hotels + Resorts credit on Amex Platinum?

The $600/year Fine Hotels + Resorts (FHR) credit is applied as $300 semi-annually (January-June and July-December) when you book through Amex Travel at qualifying FHR properties. You must book through the Amex Travel portal, not directly with the hotel. The credit applies to your room rate and incidentals. FHR bookings also include automatic breakfast for two, a $100 property credit, room upgrade when available, noon early check-in, and 4pm late checkout.

Does the Amex Gold card have any travel benefits?

Yes, though much less than Platinum. Gold earns 3x Membership Rewards points on flights booked directly with airlines or through Amex Travel. It also includes a $100 hotel credit on qualifying prepaid hotel stays of 2+ nights booked through Amex Travel. Gold does not include Centurion Lounge access, FHR credit, airline incidental credit, hotel status, or CLEAR/Global Entry credits.

What is the Hotel Collection vs Fine Hotels + Resorts?

These are two different Amex hotel programmes. Fine Hotels + Resorts is the premium tier: 1,000+ luxury properties, $300 semi-annual credit, breakfast for 2, and $100 property credit. The Hotel Collection is available on Gold: 2,900+ properties, $100 hotel credit on stays of 2+ nights (paid from your Gold card), no breakfast, and a complimentary room upgrade when available. FHR is a Platinum-exclusive benefit; Hotel Collection is available on both.
