AmexGold vs Platinum

Updated April 2026

Amex Platinum Hotel Status:
Marriott Gold + Hilton Gold (2026)

The Amex Platinum automatically qualifies you for Gold Elite status in both Marriott Bonvoy and Hilton Honors -- two of the three largest hotel loyalty programmes. Here is exactly what that means in practice.

Important: Gold card has no hotel status

The Amex Gold card does not include hotel status in either Marriott or Hilton. Hotel status is a Platinum-exclusive benefit.

Fine Hotels + Resorts: Hotel Status + Credits Combined

The $600 Fine Hotels + Resorts credit and hotel status are separate Platinum benefits that stack. When you book an FHR property through Amex Travel, you get:

  • +$300 semi-annual credit applied to your room rate
  • +Complimentary breakfast for two (valued at $60-120 at luxury properties)
  • +$100 property credit for dining, spa, or activities
  • +Room upgrade when available
  • +Noon early check-in
  • +4pm late checkout

Two FHR stays per year could realistically deliver $600 (credit) + $200 (breakfast) + $200 (property credits) = $1,000 in value. This alone justifies a significant portion of the $895 Platinum fee for hotel travellers.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I activate Marriott Gold Elite status with my Amex Platinum?

Log in to your Amex online account, navigate to Benefits, find the Marriott Bonvoy Gold Elite Status benefit, and click Enroll. You will need to have a Marriott Bonvoy account (or create one). Status is applied automatically after enrollment. It may take 24-48 hours to reflect on your Marriott account.

What does Marriott Bonvoy Gold Elite status get you?

Marriott Gold Elite (complimentary with Amex Platinum) includes: enhanced room upgrades subject to availability at check-in, late checkout at 2pm, 25% bonus Bonvoy points on stays, and a welcome gift of 250 bonus points per stay. It does not include guaranteed breakfast, which is reserved for Platinum Elite and higher. Gold Elite is the 3rd of 6 Marriott tiers.

What does Hilton Honors Gold status get you?

Hilton Honors Gold (complimentary with Amex Platinum) includes: space-available room upgrades, complimentary continental breakfast or 1,000 bonus points per night (property choice), 80% bonus on base points earned during stays, and fifth night free on standard room award redemptions. Breakfast availability is property-dependent and may be a buffet, continental, or in-room service depending on the hotel.

Is Amex Platinum hotel status worth it alone?

For frequent hotel stayers, yes. Marriott Gold Elite status typically takes 25 elite nights per year to earn through direct stays. Hilton Gold requires 20 stays or 40 nights. Getting both free with the Platinum card removes the need to concentrate hotel loyalty with one brand just to earn status. If you stay at Marriott or Hilton 10+ nights per year, this benefit alone saves $200-400 in upgrade and breakfast value.
