Annual Fee Break-even Analysis

Can the credits alone justify each card's annual fee?

Gold Card Credits

Uber Cash

$10/month

$120/yr

Dining credit

$10/month at select restaurants

$120/yr
Total credits$240
Annual fee-$250
Effective cost$10/year

The Gold card effectively costs just $10/year if you fully use Uber and dining credits. These credits are straightforward and easy to use.

Platinum Card Credits

Airline fee credit

One selected airline, incidentals

$200/yr

Uber Cash

$15/mo + $20 December bonus

$200/yr

Digital entertainment

$20/mo for streaming and news

$240/yr

Hotel credit (FHR)

Fine Hotels & Resorts bookings

$200/yr

Saks Fifth Avenue

$50 every 6 months

$100/yr

Walmart+ membership

Statement credit for membership

$155/yr
Total credits$1,095
Annual fee-$695
Effective cost-$400/year (profit)

On paper, the Platinum is free and then some. The catch: many credits require spending at specific merchants. If you do not shop at Saks, do not book FHR hotels, or do not stream enough, those credits have zero value.

Which Card Matches Your Lifestyle?

Choose Gold if you...

  • Spend $500+/month on restaurants and groceries combined
  • Travel fewer than 5-6 times per year
  • Value simplicity with fewer credits to track
  • Prefer a lower annual fee even if you leave some perks unused
  • Eat out frequently or cook with quality groceries
  • Want a card that nearly pays for itself with just Uber and dining credits

Choose Platinum if you...

  • Fly 6+ times per year and value lounge access
  • Book hotels regularly and benefit from status upgrades
  • Are willing to actively track and use all available credits
  • Value travel insurance and protections for peace of mind
  • Take international trips where Priority Pass and Centurion Lounges shine
  • Use Uber frequently and subscribe to streaming services
+

Consider both if you...

Some cardholders carry both cards to maximize every spending category. Use the Gold for 4x at restaurants and supermarkets, and the Platinum for 5x on flights and hotels. The combined annual fee is $945.

  • -Spend $1,000+/month on food AND $500+/month on travel
  • -Can justify $945/year in combined fees with combined value
  • -Want to squeeze maximum points out of every category

Can You Have Both?

Yes. Carrying both the Gold and Platinum is a legitimate strategy for maximizing rewards. You would use each card for its strongest earning categories:

Use Gold for:

  • - 4x at restaurants
  • - 4x at US supermarkets
  • - Dining and Uber credits ($240/yr)

Use Platinum for:

  • - 5x on flights
  • - 5x on hotels via Amex Travel
  • - All travel and lounge perks
  • - Airline, hotel, Saks, streaming credits ($1,095/yr)
Combined annual fees$945/year
Combined credits (if fully used)$1,335/year
Effective cost before points-$390 (profit)

This strategy only makes sense if you spend heavily in both food and travel categories and can actively use most of the credits from both cards. For most people, one card is enough.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I downgrade from Platinum to Gold?
Yes. Call the number on the back of your card and request a product change. This does not require a hard credit pull. Your Membership Rewards points transfer over.
Are the credits automatic?
Uber credits and dining credits apply automatically. The airline fee credit requires you to select a qualifying airline each year. Some credits like Saks and hotel require enrollment through your Amex account.
What is the Platinum card made of?
The Amex Platinum is made of stainless steel and weighs about 17 grams. The Gold card is also metal but lighter. Both feel noticeably premium compared to standard plastic cards.
Can I add authorized users?
Yes. Gold authorized users cost $35 each per year. Platinum authorized users are often free for the first 3 cards (check current offers), then $175 each. Authorized users get their own card number but share your account.
Do Membership Rewards points expire?
No. As long as your account remains open and in good standing, your points never expire. If you close your account, you lose your points unless you transfer them to a partner first.
Can I have both the Gold and Platinum card?
Yes. Many cardholders carry both to maximize earning: Gold for 4x at restaurants and supermarkets, Platinum for 5x on flights and hotels via Amex Travel. The combined annual fee is $945, so this strategy works best for high spenders.
Is there a business version of these cards?
Yes. The Amex Business Gold and Business Platinum have different earning structures and benefits tailored for business expenses. They are separate products with separate applications.
Which card has a better welcome bonus?
The Platinum typically offers a higher welcome bonus (often 80,000 to 150,000 points) compared to the Gold (usually 60,000 to 75,000 points). Welcome bonus offers vary and may require a minimum spending threshold within the first few months.
