Amex Gold vs Platinum: Full Benefits Comparison

A side-by-side look at every major perk on the Gold ($325/year) and Platinum ($695/year). The gap in annual fee is $370, and whether that gap is worth it depends almost entirely on which credits you will realistically use each year.

Annual Fees at a Glance

Amex Gold

$325/year

Up to $240 in annual credits ($120 dining + $120 Uber Cash) makes the effective net cost as low as $85 if you max both credits every year.

Amex Platinum

$695/year

Up to $1,500+ in potential credits (airline, hotel, Saks, Uber, digital entertainment) makes the effective net cost potentially negative for frequent travelers who use everything.

Dining Credits

The Gold card has a significant edge here. It earns 4x Membership Rewards points at restaurants worldwide, which is one of the highest dining earn rates available on any premium card. The Platinum earns just 1x at most restaurants, making it a poor choice to pull out at dinner.

Credit typeGoldPlatinum
Monthly dining credit$10/month ($120/year) at Grubhub, The Cheesecake Factory, Goldbelly, Wine.com, and Milk BarNone
Restaurant earn rate4x points1x points
U.S. supermarkets4x points (up to $25,000/year, then 1x)1x points

Verdict: Gold wins the dining category outright. If you spend $500 or more per month on food and groceries, the Gold card pays for a significant chunk of its own annual fee through points and credits.

Airline Credits and Travel Benefits

The Platinum card dominates on travel. It earns 5x points on flights booked directly with airlines or through Amex Travel, compared to 3x on the Gold. More importantly, the Platinum offers an annual airline fee credit and the coveted Global Lounge Collection access.

Airline Fee Credit

Platinum cardholders receive up to $200 per year in airline fee credits. You select one qualifying airline each January, and incidental fees like checked bags, seat upgrades, and in-flight food are reimbursed automatically. Note that the base ticket price does not count. You need to generate fees on top of a ticket purchase. The Gold card has no airline fee credit.

Flight Earn Rates

Platinum earns 5x on flights booked directly or through Amex Travel. Gold earns 3x on flights booked directly with airlines. On a $3,000 annual flight spend, that is 15,000 Platinum points vs 9,000 Gold points, a difference of 6,000 points worth roughly $60 to $120 depending on how you redeem. For road warriors spending $10,000+ on flights annually, the gap becomes very meaningful.

CLEAR Plus Credit

The Platinum provides up to $199 in CLEAR Plus credits per year. CLEAR uses biometrics to skip the ID check line at airports and some stadiums. A solo CLEAR membership costs $189 per year, so this credit nearly covers the entire subscription. The Gold does not offer CLEAR credits.

Lounge Access

Airport lounge access is one of the biggest practical differences between the two cards. The Platinum offers the Global Lounge Collection, which is the most comprehensive lounge access program available on any consumer card. The Gold has no lounge access.

Amex Gold

No lounge access

The Gold card does not include any airport lounge access. If lounge access matters to you, the Gold is not the right card for travel.

Amex Platinum

Global Lounge Collection

  • - Centurion Lounges (40+ worldwide)
  • - Priority Pass Select (1,300+ lounges globally)
  • - Delta Sky Clubs (when flying Delta)
  • - Escape Lounges and Plaza Premium Lounges
  • - Lufthansa Lounges (when flying Lufthansa)

Priority Pass alone retails for $469 per year. Centurion Lounges are considered among the best airport lounges in the United States, offering full food menus and complimentary bar service. For someone who takes six or more trips per year and values a quiet place to work before flights, the lounge access alone can justify the Platinum fee gap over the Gold.

Hotel Status and Credits

Marriott Bonvoy and Hilton Honors Gold Status

The Platinum card comes with complimentary Marriott Bonvoy Gold Elite status and Hilton Honors Gold status. Hilton Gold unlocks room upgrades, free breakfast at many properties, and bonus points on stays. Marriott Gold unlocks late checkout, room upgrades when available, and bonus points. These statuses normally require 25 to 40 qualifying nights per year to earn independently. For occasional travelers, receiving them automatically is a meaningful perk. The Gold card does not include hotel status.

Fine Hotels + Resorts and Hotel Collection

Platinum cardholders who book through Amex Travel get access to Fine Hotels + Resorts (FHR), which offers room upgrades when available, complimentary daily breakfast for two, guaranteed 4 PM checkout, and a property credit of $100 on qualifying stays. The average FHR benefit value per stay is estimated at $550. The Hotel Collection offers a $100 credit on stays of two nights or more at thousands of properties. The Gold card does not have FHR access.

Saks Fifth Avenue Credit (Platinum only)

The Platinum provides up to $100 in Saks Fifth Avenue credits per year: $50 from January through June, and $50 from July through December. This credit applies to any purchase and can be used online. For cardholders who already shop at Saks or plan to, it is straightforward money back. For those who do not shop luxury retail, it adds friction.

Uber Cash Credits

CardMonthly creditAnnual totalApplies to
Gold$10$120Uber rides and Uber Eats in the U.S.
Platinum$15 (Jan-Nov), $20 (Dec)$200Uber rides and Uber Eats in the U.S.

Credits do not roll over month to month. Use them or lose them. Both cards require you to add the card as a payment method in the Uber app.
